Joseph Hastings (U-H Joseph – 001) (1698-1783)

This Joseph is the son of John Hastings I. When looking at the Hastings of Generation 3, two Joseph Hastings are found. The first Joseph Hastings is the son of John Hastings I…

…whose date of baptism was July 10, 1698. He was baptized the same day as his brother Samuel. The second Joseph Hastings was born to Joseph Hastings I on January 3, 1685. According to Bond, the son of John Hastings I was a farmer, who died in Waltham on March 23, 1783, at the age of 8. He does not provide any information about his wife or family. As concerns the son of Joseph Hastings I, he was a home builder who originally lived in Watertown, but later moved to Waltham, where he was Selectman in 1748. Thus there is a fifteen-year difference in ages between the two, and both had different occupations.  But another key difference is that Bond had a wealth of information about the Joseph Hastings who worked as a home builder, but very little about the Joseph Hastings who worked as a farmer.

  Taking a step back, it should be noted that there is a conflict within the sources about which Joseph Hastings belongs to Joseph Hastings I and John Hastings I respectively. Joseph married Lydia Brown on March 7, 1718…
